Atregona, officially known as the Atregonese Aigentarate, is a nation in south and central Anaria. It is composed of two main regions separated by the Argirun Sea: the northern mainland Atregona and the southern Eccasian Archipelago. Atregona also includes additional territories such as the island of Laustro in the western Argirun, the tip of the Ashtem Peninsula, and colonies in Tzeraka and D'Runia. Atregona shares land borders with Sudety, Zelezmia and Meridolvenia among others.
Etymology
The name "Atregona" is thought to derive from the historical capital of the Indaric Empire, Atereguriko, which in Old Tragonic means "refuge we gen." This name also relates to the Tragoni ethnic group found in areas previously controlled by the Indaric Empire.
Geography and Climate
Atregona features a diverse geography, with its climate and biodiversity varying across its territories. Specific details on geography and climate were not provided in the text.
History
- Main article: History of Atregona
Pre-History and Ancient History ( x - 3300)
The Eccasian Archipelago was inhabited by early hominids between 1.5 million years ago and as recently as 35,000 years ago. Modern humans are believed to have reached the region over 40,000 years ago, demonstrating advanced maritime skills. The Tragonic languages, which are unrelated to Kachal-Anarian languages, suggest that the Tragoni people or culture occupied central Anaria before the spread of Kachal-Anarian languages.
Erecund period (3309 - 6225)
In 3309 RH the religion of Erecund was created in the Atregona peninsula with the erection of the holy tablet of Erecund. This tablet was forced by a thunder striking a limestone tablet, encraving it with eight lines with rules. This religion spread south via Ekhijal sea to the Ekhixal islands. The religion spread into large part of the region causing the creation of the Indaric Empire an ancient Tragonic-speaking thalassocratic empire with Erecund at its center. This empire controlled the Ekhijal Sea and influenced the eastern, central, and southern Anarian seaboards through a network of client kingdoms. The Indaric Empire became a dominant force in Anaria but with expanse of the empire and the neighboring region following a different religions, religiois rival were created. Many kingdoms of Anaria were not welcoming the Tragoni and their religion so they headed north and land in Erapo on the island of Nester Mayor. Here it was welcomed and the kingdom of Erapo used the Erecund religion to create the Erinic Empire. The Indaric Empire helped the Erinic Empire establish a strong grasp over the island. The Erinic Empire became a close ally of the Indaric Empire. After both the Indaric Empire and the Erinic Empire becomes dominant and stable powers, the Erecund golden age began and lasted from 4219 until 4823 RH.
The kingdoms bordering the Indaric Empire were getting more problematic, fueled by the difference in religion. The two empires fought many battles around the Ekhijal sea but when The Erinic Empire faced more internal struggles due to foreign religions and the grand plague of 4823 RH which also reached the Indaric Empire. The loss of life and stabilty caused the Erinic Empire to pull out of the Ekhijal to defend their home land from rebels and pirates. The withdraw of Erinic forces from the Ekhijal region, the Indaric Empire stood alone and they started losing increasing more wars. Because the plague of 4823 RH hit the Indaric Empire less hard, the Indaric Empire was more able to hold the empire mostly together even though they lost land mostly in the east and the south. When the Erinic Empire and the Indaric Empire had recovered from the plague of 4823 RH in 5001 RH, almost right after, a war with the Western broke out again. The Indaric Empire and the Erinic Empire fought together again to defend the homeland of land Erecund in the many religious wars but the war of 5264 RH, was very costly mostly for the war support of the Erinic Forces. The Erinic lords pressured the King of the Erinic Empire to pull Erinic Empire to weakend it grasp over the island.
By 5329 the Erinic Empire collapsed and the Indaric Empire lost its main ally. The Indaric Empire went on the defensive and focussed on trade instead. The Indaric Empire signed a non-agression pact with most of its neighbours which meant the regional wars cooled down, at least the ones involving the Indaric Empire. This peacefull new are caused the creation of an Indaric Empire maritime trade focussed economy. The Indaric Empire opened up trading post on many coastlines they explored and bought from other, a few of these trading post were on the island of Nestor Mayor, helping the many lords who were fighting on the island to stay up to date.
In 6224 RH the Indaric Empire once again found itself in another brutal religious war by Meyistri tribes from the south and Cheltai and Karsk tribes from the north during the migration period. The entire Indaric Empire was falling apart without the Erinic Empire there to safe the Indaric Empire, the empire lost a lot of land and it lost many islands.
Rise of the Kingdom of Atregona (Atregonako Erreinua) (6225 - 6735)
The only regions that were not captured by 6235 RH were the Atregona peninsula and the Ekhixal islands but they were split into two new kingdoms, the Kingdom of Atregona and the Kingdom of Ekhixal. The two kingdoms stayed close allies and in 6288 RH they took back the Bakearen islands and the Urtzain island. The Kingdom of Atregona also managed to take back many of its northern lands including the valley of Eregon where the Erecund tablet were made. The unity among the Tragoni people from the fromer Indaric Empire started to weakened over time until the united Erecund treaty of 6274 RH broke in 6561 RH that led to take back the Bakearen islands and the Urtzain island. The hostility was caused by disagreements about who owned what trade routes. In 6672 RH, a war broke out between the two kingdoms resulting in an Atregonan victory. The Kingdom of Atregona put a puppet king in charge of the Kingdom of Ekhixal and in 6732 RH, the Kingdom of Ekhixal was integrated into the Kingdom of Atregona. With the integration of Kingdom of Ekhixal, the nation became know Atregona (the same name as it is known today).
Age of stability (6735 - 6983)
From the creation of modern Atregona in 6732 the region saw a period of steady growth and rarely any wars. The few years that were fought were fought over trade routes with other naval powers. The Atregonan economy slowly grew and it saw immigrants from the Nestorian islands. Many didn't intend to stay but after decades being refuges in Atregona they decided so stay and settle the island of Hora. Hora became a mini Nester within the borders of Atregona and the grand temple of Erecund friendship was build in the north of Hora. The island of Hora was also often used by Nestorian lords for peace deals. The Atregonan government tried to establish colonies in the regions they have put trading post in the hope to spread their religion and create another friend like the old Erinic Empire, however this time there more powerfull members but they managed to create an colony on the Shattered Coast and Reach Coast.
Return of a friend (6983 - 7496)
The lord of Giondo on the island of Nestor Mayor was getting close to reunite the Nestorian island giving the Atregonan government their old ally back to its former glory. However this unification was slow and unstable so the Atregonan government invested in the Giondo unifaction efforts. Without Atregonan intervention in 7683, the island would take another few centuries to unite. By 7405, Atregona helped the creation of the Nestor Herdom by funding and sometimes hosting the unification talks. After the creation of the new Nestor Herdom, the Atregonan government started trading at a much larger scale and they tried to end Nestoran isolation. However, the Nestor Herdom was still afraid to open up because it led to fall of the Erinic Empire.
With the return of peace on Nester Mayor they entered a Renaissance Era with steady economic growth, this economic growth in Nestor caused the Atregonan economy to growth as well. With Atregona being the only nation Nestor was wanting to trade with, Atregona benifitted a lot from this. Atregona sold Nestorian goods to the outside world boosting the Atregonan economy. Nestor was aware of this practise but they valued their stability more then then increased economic gain.
Atregona entered the industrial area in 7412, the industrial revolution started to take off in Atregona further boosting their economy. By 7440 Atregona had one of the strongest economies of all of Gotha behind the mayor powers. This also lead them to spread their technology all over their trading ports including to the port of Ricar on Nester Mayor starting their industrial revolution. In 7471 RH, Xar Mulca who studied at the University of Getardine (capital of Atregona) proposed the land value tax. The first test of his economic system was tested on the island on Hora. It was a success and therefore implement in Nestor and later on also on the Ekhixal islands.
Pan-Anarian War Era (7496 - 7600 RH)
Atregona tried very hard to stay neutral in Pan-Anarian War and it worked. However in 7521, Nestor was invaded by Häverist forces. Atregona tried helping out by providing naval support but the Häverist navy was no match for Atregona and the little Nestor had. In 7526 RH, Nestor fell and came under new management known as the Häverist-aligned Commonhold of Nestor. The island of Hora became the main refuge camp for fleeing Nestorians, among the the refugees was also the lord of Giondo fearing for his life. The island of Hora was given to the lord of Giondo has small version of Nestor but still under the flag of Atregona.
Nestor regained independence in 7541 RH with Livarian and Atregonan help. The son of the lord of Giondo who was born on Hora returned to the mainland and becoming one of the few lords that survived. The elder lord who fled in 7525 RH to Hora decided to stay in Atregona however some local Atregonans were not happy by having a foreign lord owning an island which was historically Atregonan. But because many of the original Atregonans who lived on Hora left when the Nestorians fled there in the thousands. The elder lord held a referendum keeping the status quo on the island and 62% were in favor. After the Loon-Drinor war on Nester Mayor in 7561 and a series of talks, the entire region was united again in 7566 RH, the first time the island was united since the Erinic Empire.
Soon after Nestor united they also removed their isolationist policies but not by the request of Atregona, this sudden opening of an entire economy which Atregona couldn't exploit anymore caused the Atregon Crash in 7567. Investors started investing much more in Nestor but this came at the cost the Atregon economy. The extreme decentralized nature of Nestor made it very interesting for investors. Nestor entered its fast economic growth in 7592 while in the first time in a few centuries, the Atregonan economy shrunk. Atregona hoped to improve their economy by getting closer to the Nestorian economy but their efforts provide barely any results.
Joined Economic Organization (7600 - now)
The Atregonan economy kept shrinking with the money needing to keep things afloat now coming from Nestor like companies like the Garion Robotic Industries (GRI). The economic problems were not being fixed by the patchwork many politicians were doing most of the time so they proposed an joined economic zone on Hora and eventually all of Atregona. In 7604, Nestor and Atregona created the Nastern (Nastern Ekonomia antolakuntza ekonomikoa) creating a closer tied economy and they choose one currency, the distirak. The joined economic zone on Hora became a great success and even though the Nestorian economy growth with hiccups and some turbulance, it helped the Atregonan economy finnally not to be left behind. A few smaller island have also started to convert to an anarchy style government with supervision of Nestorian professors to keep the region from being a mess. Many of the islanders are slowly leaning to a Nestorian style anarchy starting minor convertions but the mainlanders are very resistance fearing it destroys what it means to be Atregonan and the death of traditions. The Nastern have decided to not press the anarchy style onto the mainland and instead make it a cultural and religion capital of the Nastern joined economic zone. Even though the nation of Atregona is slowly converting to a Nestorian Anarchy style of governance, they are far from being just like or even one nation, the Atregonan indentity is still clearly vissable.
Government and Politics
Atregona is ruled by an aigentar chosen through male-preference cognatic-primogeniture. The aigentar, historically a supreme ruler, is advised by the high advisor (goitanune) and the Central Council (Sinetsiak).
x
Over time, a separation of powers developed, distributing authority among civil, religious, commercial, and military administrative bodies.
Reforms in the early 76th century by Aigentar Elorro significantly reduced the influence of these groups, leading to the establishment of the first Atregonese constitution in 7511 RH, which introduced a secular judicial system.
Administrative Divisions
Atregona is divided into 40 banners, each governed by an appointed governor. These banners are further subdivided into 318 districts. The banners are grouped into nine regions, significant for cultural, judicial, and military purposes.
Culture
Atregonese culture reflects a blend of Tragoni, Meyistri, Illista, and northern Anarian elements, with a strong Erecund influence. Atregonese cuisine is cosmopolitan, integrating northern and southern Anarian flavors with influences from D'Runia, Tzeraka, and Tharna, heavily relying on exotic herbs and spices. Staple foods include wheat, eshialor (a pseudograin), and beans, while common proteins include fish, cephalopods, caprids, small canids, native fowls, and boar.
Demographics
Atregona has a population of 42,009,055 evenly divided between mainland Atregona and the Ekhixal Islands. The nation is predominantly Erecund, with small Orkanan and Naskel minorities.
Religion
Erecund is the majority religion, with Orkanan and Naskel as minority religions.
Languages
The most widely spoken language is Atregonese, part of the Tragonic language family, a language isolate specific to central Anaria. Other languages include Vaixellan in the north, Ashetemic in the Ashtem region, Juranese, Gisarran, and Bojovic in the west. Atregonese also has placed a lasting impact on the Nestorian language with 15% of words being the same.
