The Dragar Monopoly (Pastanan: Monopolivm Dragaranivm) was an ancient Pastanic civilisation, commercial and defensive confederation and later centralised empire that stretched from the central Medio Sea across much of Northern Anaria that reached its zenith between the 57th and 64th centuries RH. Initially a small collection of independent cities on the Cadrian Peninsula, the Dragar Monopoly grew into a vast network of interconnected cities, colonies and territories that were defined by their speaking of the Dragaric languages and Dragaric Orkanan faith, the precusor to the modern Peratolian Orkanan.
The Monopoly was formerly founded at the Conclave of Valance in 5832RH, which saw Valance and a number of other Cadrian city states band together to defend their collective interests during the turbulent Migration Period. Over time, this alliance grew to encompass hundreds of polities right across northern Anaria, with colonies and trading posts stretching from the Western Straits at the western mouth of the Medio Sea and as far east as the Malorski-speaking regions of the Cheltic Isles and Medovenia that looked out to the North Settant Sea in the east.
For much of the Dragaric period, the highest concentrations of wealth and power were focused in the Cadrian Peninsula, but overtime the centre of gravity steadily shifted eastwards towards Auresia. By the time of the Dragaric Schism of 6234, Auresia and its capital Cedelphia had eclipsed the old Cadrian city states in power and wealth, and the Auresian emperor exerted ever greater power across the Monopoly. The Schism saw the rupture of the Monopoly and the subsequent establishment of what became known as the Dragar Imperium - a centralised empire with its capital at Cedelphia. The Dragar Monopoly was formally dissolved in 6315 when the Auresian Empire assumed uncontested control over the remnants of the Monopoly, though many other states would claim the inheritance and mantel of the Monopoly for centuries, including the Confederation of Cadria.
For much of its history, the Dragar Monopoly was governed as a decentralised confederation, with Valance and later Cedelphia as the de facto capital. The various rulers and represenatives of the at times hundreds of members of the Monopoly would gather in various locations to hold conclaves, which became the principal organ of administration and executive decision-making in the Monopoly until the Dragaric Schism in the 63rd century.
The influence of the Dragar Monopoly has proven significant and long-lasting, with its institutions and culture having a lasting influence on the development of art, architecture, language, literature, law, religion, philosophy, and forms of government across its territories and spheres of influence. The Dragaric languages remain a large language group to this day, while the spread of Dragaric Orkanan enabled Peratolian Orkanan to become one of the largest denominations in the Orkanan world.
History
The early Dragar Monopoly can trace its roots back to the void left after the collapse of the Cadrai Empire and the subsequent domination of the region by the Orkanan Realm of Stoldavia, which Orkanised the Cadrian peninsula. However, by the 5800s the nascent Monopoly would come to fill the vacuum left by the Orkanan Realm after the latter's collapse, allowing it to spread Dragaric culture, language and religious practices through trade, colonisation, settlement and eventually conquest. The Monopoly was formerly founded at the Conclave of Valance in 5832RH, which saw Valance and a number of other Cadrian city states band together to defend their collective interests. The initial treaty established a loose maritime and commercial alliance that served as a major bulwark against the instability during the Migration Period - Dragaric traders were able to resupply besieged cities across Anaria Major. This subsequently built deep military and commercial relationships across far-flung regions that came to become mutually dependent upon one another for their survival and prosperity.
Over the following centuries, the Monopoly expanded its commercial influence by setting up trading posts and colonies across northern Anaria.
