The Nestoric Herdom (Nestor Lordship) is a nation state on the island of Nestor. The island is located in north Settant sea and it consists of 2 major island, Nestor Major and Nester Minor. The nation consists of 13 lords with the a king as the head of state.

Each lord has relative autonomy with the nation and the lords often compete with each other to create a strong economy. The strong competition between the lords is part of Nestoric culture and finds its roots in the warring lords period in Nestoric history. Each lord is in charge of a Faction which which have their own local governments and different way of governing. The nation has an united parliament where for each 60 thousand people, the lord earns one seat in parlement. To gain more power, the lords needs more people. In order to attract people to their Faction, the lords try to make their region as attractive as possible. This healthy competition sparks a lot of innovation and development. The nation is known to have a capitalistic economic system that insists on constant competition to improve. The nation is known for its military culture, high quality manufacturing and their traditional values.

Etymology

The name of the nation originates from the post-warring lords' era, a time that followed the dominance of the Erinic Empire, which had unified the region before the era of the warring lords. In the native language, Erecund was originally known as Erincund, which had been incorporated into the Erinic Empire.

After the fall of the Erinic Empire, each lord ruled over their respective regions, and they named their states after these regions. It was during this time that the kingdom of Giondo emerged, uniting the various lords. As the kingdom began trading with Helreich, the people of Helreich were surprised to find that most inhabitants of the nation lived in castles. Consequently, they referred to the people of the kingdom as the “people of the castle.”

As many lords disliked the idea of the kingdom being named after one of the states, they started using the native translation of “people of the castle.” In the native language, “castle” translates to “nest,” and adding the suffix “-or” indicates “people of.” This led to the creation of the name “Nestor.”

However, the lords wanted to emphasize the unique factor of the nation, symbolized by their lordship. In the native language, “lordship” translates to “Herdom.” Thus, the combination of “Nestor” and “Herdom” gave rise to the modern name of Nestoric Herdom, meaning “People of the Castled Lordship.”

By using these names, the nation sought to honor its history and heritage, representing the amalgamation of its past as well as the distinct qualities of its united people and their lordship.

History

Acient history

The island of Nester has been inhabited for a long time. The people on the island were known as the Nestalic but this is because the real name of the tribe was lost due to a lack of written records. The Nestalics lived a simple life as nomads on the land. The people lived on the land and used fishing techniques. The Nestalics were introduced to farming and other technologies from the mainland of Anaria. This meant that even though Nestor was on an island, they still received technologies from the mainland.

The religious clash

The Nestalics and the peoples of the mainland lived in relative peace for a while. From the southern lands the religion of Erecund spread to the Nestor islands. The Nestalics accepted the religion with open arms. The religion the Nestalic up to this point believed in was very limited and Erecund provided much more guidance.

However, the rise of Orkanan from Anarian mailand started to spread quickly. The Orkanan religion quickly replaced Erecund. The Nestalics were not pleased with the Orkanan spread and wars were fought between the Erecund nations and the Orkanan nations. Orkanan nations won the wars pushing the Erecund religion deep into Astragonian territory and on the island of Nester. The Nestalics turned unfriendly to almost all the Anarian friends so therefore the nation closed its borders. The closing of the borders was meant to protect the island from the Orkanan religion. But because Astragonia also kept its Erecund religion going, the Nestalics allowed only Astragonia to trade with them. All non-Astragonian ships were not allowed to enter any Nestalic harbour under any circumstances.

The warring lords period

The Nestalics were united under the Erinics during the wars against the Orkanan nations. When Eninics closed the borders of the nation to reduce outside influence, the national economy went into recession. This economic recession caused the nation to become unstable and a few decades later, the nation was split into 13 lords. All 13 lords fought over control of the islands but because the previous kingdom put lords in power in balanced regions, no lord had an advantage. The warring lords fought each other in deadly wars for a very long time. The lords created large defensive structures in their lands and a high birth rate was upheld. The war fought between the lords was deadly for both sides, but because of the constant high birth rate, the population.

The warring lords created a strong warrior culture under the soldiers. Every fit man would serve in the military, if the soldier survived long enough, he was deemed worthy of a family. The wars provided for a type of natural selection that caused only the best soldiers to reproduce. This system caused a large surplus of women during this period. The strongest and most successful soldiers were allowed to retire and focus on raising a whole new generation of soldiers. This meant that a woman married to a soldier had an obligation to have as many children as possible. The women who didn’t get married to a soldier became dominant in the social services of the nation including basic education, nursing and caretaker.

The rise of Giondo and the Nestoric Herdom

After centuries of constant wars the lord of Giondo was victorious in uniting the islands under one lord. He called himself the king of the nation. However the lords that he had acquired in various ways were not easy to control. In order to stop the inflighting and other splintering of the region, the king of Kiondo kept the lords in power and had autonomy over their own lands. The lords liked this idea but they were not pleased that the nation is called the kingdom of Giondo.

The kingdom of Giondo opened the borders of the nation to create trade agreements. The first nation that traded with the kingdom was Helreich. The Helreich delegation who came to the island saw the result of the warring lords periods. The delegation referred to the people as Brucht people, meaning people of the castle. Many lords who disapproved of the name of Giondo began using the Nestallic translation of the name Helreich gave them, Nestor (people of the castle in Nestallic). The king realised that Nestor was a more unifying name than then Giondo and therefore changed the name to the ‘’Nestoric Herdom’’. Nest meaning ‘’castle’’, -oric meaning ‘’people of’’, her meaning ‘’lord’’ and dom meaning land. Creating the full name of ‘’lords of the castle lands’’ or ‘’People of castles’’ for short.

Industrialization of the Nestoric Herdom

The continued competition saw a few lords start to industrialise. The city of Ricar invested heavily in the industry and factories and soon became the main industrial city of the Herdom. The city started to produce mostly guns and other war materials. These war materials were exported mainly to Anaria.

Not long after the great industrial works of Ricar were running the second Wolgos war broke out. Many nations were in need of weapons precisely what the main industrial hardland of the nation was making. The selling of weapons during the Wolgos wars made the Nestoric Herdom very rich. The Nestoric military also played a part in the Wolgos wars. The excess money the nation got from the militaries buying their weapons was used to invest in a more diverse economy. The nation had a vision to become the best factory in the world. They didn’t aim to produce an overwhelming amount of cheap products but they aimed at a decent amount of high quality products.

The first Wolgos war

The northern coast of Nester was often attacked by the Wolgos. The intensity increased slowly over time. But a few years before the official Wolgos war, a part of the northern coast was under control of the Wolgos. The Nestoric Herdom fought the Wolgos fiercely even though they didn’t know how. At first the lords lost many battles against the Wolgos but the dertimed lords with centuries of war experience slowly started to make great gains in getting their island back. At this point, the Wolgos were at war with a large Anarian Alliance. After the Wolgos were pushed off Nester, the Nestorics fought the Wolgos on other fronts in the war.

Post first Wolgos war

The efforts the Nestorics put in the war improved relations between the Orkanan Anarians and the Erecund Nestorics. The Nestoric Herdom saw great improvements in technology, standard of living and resources but they were determined to keep the lordship in place. The lords competed against each other since the fall of the Erinics and this provided constant growth in technology, in order to keep this innovation going, the Herdom created a system where the lords still competed against each other but instead of via wars, they would use economics and friendly romp instead.

The Nestoric Herdom today

The Nestoric Herdom today is still a large player as an industrial power. The large factories of Ricar create many products used all over the world. The fact that the Herdom is located on an island also caused the nation to become a large maritime trader. The main trading partner of the Herdom is Levarya but the nation does business with many nations. The nation kept on to its Erecund religion and its lordship way of governing. The nation is also still controlled by a monarch who still has decent power in the nation.

Government

Political structure

The political culture of the Nestoric Herdom is decentralised, with the local lords of the states having autonomy of their state. However the lords do make national laws in the National parliament in order to create a united nation and help lord cooperation. The National parliament has 864 seats which are distributed according to population. Each lord can decide who they send for the National parliament, this can be anyone, not only politicians but also CEOs. Most lord's use a democratic system of a technocracy in order to elect their representatives. The 864 members of the National parliament intern vote for a national representative, known as the house of lords.

Legislative

The National parliament (house of lords) has 864 members which are elected by each state. Each lord gets 1 seat in the National parliament for every 70 thousand people under their jurisdiction. The biggest lords have over 100 seats in the National parliament each and smaller lords only have around 50. All the law that the National parliament creates has to go through the king who can VETO any law the National parliament wants to pass. The royal institution stays in contact with all people in order to see if the people agree. If the royal institution thinks that people disagree, the royal house will organise a national referendum.

Basic lord political system

Each lord has their own political system, one that best suits their culture and location. But by law each lord has four branches. Each lord has their own Faction parliament (legislative), the Rejuds (the judges), ministers (executive) and the journalists. The faction parliament votes on laws proposed by the ministers. If a law is passed the minister puts the law in action but the journalists and the faction parliament have the right to check if ministers are doing a good job. The journalists do not only check the ministers but they check all branches and communicate any problems to the people.

Subdivisions

The nation is split into 13 lords with 9 on Nestor Major, 3 on Nestor Minor and 1 on Spal. Each of these lords has their own system for how they want to split their own state. Each state has to stay loyal to the king and not doing so will make the state look like a traitor. If a state is not loyal they have broken the chivalry code which makes them look bad. If a lord breaks the code, they would lose people rather quickly because the people are afraid that more of the code will be broken. A no go for the Nestoric Herdom following Nestic Erecund.

Foreign relations

The islands are located on a path between Anaria, Atlaia and D’runia. Even though nations can avoid the international waters of Nestor, this location makes the nation a trade hub between the 3 continents. Nestoric lords prefer to be able to trade with every nation on international trade but the national parliament wants to minimise certain political ideologies to enter Nestor, most notably Orderism.

Military

Economy

Agriculture

Nestor has a decently sized agricultural sector mainly around on the southern coast of Nestor mayor. The north of Nestor mayor is heavily forested and is only recently part of the economy due to other natural resources in the region. The southern coast used to be deciduous forest which has been chopped down to mainly produce wheat crops. Besides wheat the sector also produces a lot of chicken products, potatoes, apples, cucumbers and tomatoes. The biggest agricultural export of Nestor is pasta due to the large amount of wheat and eggs the nation produces. Notably the nation produces barely any spices besides paprika but that is not native to Nestor. The nation does produce a lot of salt historically to season their food. The nation also produces different types of vegetables and fruit but these are not produced to be exported outside of Nestor. Even though the islands have been in a war a while ago, the food culture in the nation was not much different between lords.

Forestry

Lumber is an important build material for construction for Nestor, especially historically. The Jungs who control a large part of the northern part of Nestor Mayor used to have timber as its main export. The name of the people group means people of the trees. Today, timber is still used for the modules used in the large super structures of the big cities. The Jungs use large parts of lands to grow very high quality wood spread over thousands of small regions. Each year, a select amount of regions will be chopped down and replanted. The Jungs do not use all their land for this purpose because they also want to protect forests. The most common tree farmed in these farm lands is the common oak tree. Wood that is discarded and faeces of humans and animals are used to enrich the soil for a new generation of trees. The areas that are chopped down are not in a line but scattered to more healthy forests. The Jungs are known to take care of their trees like they were their farm animals.

Fishing

Nestor is on an island and has a healthy fishing industry in the Stoldic Ocean. The fishing industry is the biggest food source for the island of Spal. Spal has one of the largest fishing fleets in the Stoldic ocean. Spal relies heavily on the fishing industry to support both its economy and population.

Mining

Nestor has a large mining industry but the mining industry is linked to the factories in the nation. Excess resources are not sold abroad in order to not create a resource crisis in the nation. The nation has large Iron, Zinc, Coal, Copper and Aluminum deposits. The Coal supply on Nestor Minor is running low for the national energy supply so Coal is quickly being replaced by other energy sources like hydro, wind, solar and nuclear power.

Manufacturing

The main industry of Nestor is still manufacturing just like in the industrial revolution. The nation has a policy that as much as possible should be made in house to reduce outside reliance. The nation also focuses on a skilled labour force by having universities for practical skilled, science applier and scientific researchers. This is done to encourage well educated people to pursue not only research. Not every lord has the same manufacturing model. Rinnar is heavily focussed on automation and large scale industries while Erincor has a very large workshop industry. The great industrial works of Ricar have been the heart of the Nestorian manufacturing economy but when the coal mines of the Nestor Minor ran out, the company diversified their economy. In the modern area with new energy sources, the company is growing faster than ever. The time of a lower energy supply had been vital for the Rinnarian economy because it showed that just relying on one factory was too dangerous. Each state has a strong local economy to be at least self-sufficient. This also means that the lords often compete against each other which in turn creates healthy competitions.

Even though many lords use a planned-economy system, there is no national planned economy in order to preserve a true competitive environment. Over-consumption is something no state wants to happen due to it being seen as lost potential. One of the methodes the nation uses to prevent this is by making long lasting products for an increased price. Dirt cheap products that in the long run are still expensive are seen as consumer fraud. The nation also loves the ideas of many things being modular, this has been made popular by the great industrial works of Ricar who created most of the early products. The company was heavily influenced by the military who is a true believer in modularity.

Transportation and infrastructure

The nation is split into three landmasses, two of whom are rather large. Nestor Mayor historically used sailboats to transport goods and people but with the introduction of trains, the island focused heavily on rail infrastructure. Nestor Minor and Spal on the other hand still use a lot of boats for transport but a rail network is present on Nestor Minor.

Both the states and national government provide infrastructure between the cities in order to make travel cheaper for the people. Travel tickets are subsidised by the government in order to make sure the people can freely move between states. This cheap movement is vital for the system to work well, because the more the people move to a state, the more power it gets. This can only be done if there is sufficient infrastructure between states. The nation has a few large submerged cables between Mayor, Minor and Spal for communication done with optic fibre cables.

The nation however does not invest a lot in a highway system, outside the core, most roads are gravel roads. The nation has a lot of gravel roads for the military and the industry but not a lot for civilian transport. The sectors in the cities themselves are also connected by metro because there are no roads. The cities have small micro vans, steps, roller skates and bikes.

Demographics

Gender

Nestor is a nation known for its traditional values that have been in place since the time of warring lords. Gender roles are an important part of the culture here, although they are not enforced by laws. People of any gender are free to pursue the careers they desire. While some professions might have fewer men or women, this is not seen as a problem as long as the person is skilled. Criticizing such choices is seen as an attack on the hierarchy of competence, which is not accepted in Nestor.

The influence of the warring lords era, despite its distance in the past, still greatly impacts gender roles. During that time, women outnumbered men, which allowed women to expand their roles beyond traditional boundaries. Previously, women were primarily expected to support the population growth, but this era enabled them to contribute to the workforce. Before this period, women were limited to childcare and were absent from education and other professions. However, during the warring lords era, women became dominant in fields like education, healthcare, and social work.

Men, on the other hand, tended to gravitate towards jobs involving physical materials, like construction, science, engineering, and the military. This inclination was supported by research conducted by King Bulgun of Giondo on gender preferences. These gender roles are not only evident in the workplace but also extend to the home. Women typically take on childcare responsibilities at home or work part-time if they don't have children. Men, regardless of whether they have children, typically work full-time. It's important to note that not all households adhere to this system, but it is the most common arrangement.

Ethinc groups

In Nestor, the dominant ethnic group is the Nestors themselves, but there are also other ethnic groups living within the country's borders. The nation engages in significant trade with the regions of D’runia, Anaria, and Atlaia, which leads to people from these places coming to live in Nestor. Integration is highly valued in Nestor due to the importance of preserving their traditional culture. The number of ethnic Nestorians leaving the country is low because of their strong cultural ties to the nation. Within Nestor, there exists a subgroup of Nestorians known as the Nesibles. These individuals are survivors of the Esible disaster, which was caused by the GEDI drug institution. The Nesibles have their own land and make up 0.2% of the total population.

Cuisine

The cuisine of Nestor has developed through the centuries with the roots many centuries ago. The Nestoric cuisine takes heavy influence from the old Erinic Empire. Significant changes happened to the Nestoric Cuisine with the introduction of potatoes and tomatoes from distant regions now important to the Nestoric cuisine in the 7300s. Nestoric cuisine is diverse, and each lord has its one unique special dish. In modern times, all dishes are combined into the Nestoric cuisine known all over the world.

The Nestoric cuisine basis is made of pasta, fish, fruit, and vegetables and characterized by its extreme simplicity and variety. Most dishes in Nestoric cuisine have no more then 10 ingredients total, sometimes only 4 ingredients. Nestoric cooks rely chiefly on the quality of the ingredients rather than on elaborate preparation. The cooks aim at a good balance between the taste and the texture of food. Even though Nestoric food is often blunt, the food still is seen as good tasting food.

The Nestoric Cuisine relies on traditional Nestoric products. Eggs, chicken cold cut, wine are central to Nestoric cuisine alongside with pasta and Nesti, a wheat-based dough topped with tomatoes and cheese. Desserts have a long tradition of merging local flavours such fruits, eggs, and vanilla.

The meal structure of Nestor is based around the dinner period. Dinner is always done right before sleeping and the people fill themselves up as much as they can. After a human has eaten, humans get less active, a perfect time to take a rest or sleep. The breakfast is often simple and based around liquids, sometimes just water filled with supplements, fruits, or other blended foods. Lunch is also very light but not as light as breakfast. The people eat small snacks when they are very hungry, and the productivity is lowered. There is a clear difference between having an empty stomach and being hungry.

Notes:

The lord System

The Nestoric Herdom retains a feudal system similar to the medieval ages, where the land is divided into territories owned by lords. These lords, in turn, are loyal to the royal house in the capital city of Giondo, which acts as the central authority. While the nation maintains a feudal structure, the traditional castles have been repurposed into military bases, reflecting a modernization of defense and security strategies. The lords not only control the military bases but also the cities and lands that come under their jurisdiction. They are responsible for providing essential services like protection, education, and collecting taxes, much like the role of medieval feudal lords. Every person has the right to move between factions freely, without any interference or influence from the faction they leave. This encourages competition between factions, as people naturally gravitate towards places with better living conditions and opportunities. The competition between factions is driven by the desire to attract more people, which in turn grants them more power in the faction council. Factions with a larger population have more seats in the council and therefore more influence over national decisions.

The Royal House

Despite the diversification in governance styles among the different factions, loyalty to the royal house is a non-negotiable requirement. This loyalty ensures unity within the nation and a cohesive approach to international affairs. The royal house in Giondo exercises certain powers over the lords and factions. It can create laws concerning education, minimum wage, standardization, and internal relations, serving as a unifying force for the nation. While the faction council has significant authority, the king holds the power to veto any law, providing a check on the council's decisions. Loyalty to the royal house is emphasized as part of the Chivalry code, ensuring stability and unity within the nation.

Governance

Each faction elects its lords through different methods, allowing for a diverse range of governance styles within the nation. Some factions may have a monarchy, others a democracy, and yet others use an orderists system. This allows for a wide array of societal structures coexisting under the central banner of the Nestoric Herdom. The faction council is comprised of 864 seats, and each faction's representation is based on the number of people they control. The council is responsible for discussing national issues, creating agreements, and proposing and voting on national laws. Factions have the freedom to choose their representatives in the council, which can include not only political figures but also company CEOs or other influential individuals. This diversity can lead to a variety of perspectives and expertise contributing to decision-making.

Structures

The modern castles, acting as military bases, can be very large, even encompassing millions of people in a single city. This indicates significant population centers, and the presence of millions of people in a castle reinforces the importance of these military bases in the nation's structure. National taxes are primarily used to develop and maintain infrastructure between cities, facilitating the free movement of people within the nation. This promotes mobility and integration among factions.

Military culture

The Chivalry code holds great importance to all citizens of the Nestoric Herdom. This code likely encompasses values like loyalty, honor, and duty, reinforcing the sense of national identity and a commitment to the greater good. The factions engage in controlled military exercises known as “little war” games. These games allow them to test their military capabilities in a safe and learning-oriented manner. It fosters healthy competition and cooperation as factions often team up with others to improve their skills. In times of war, all factions put aside their differences and work together towards a common goal. Infighting is considered treason, reinforcing the importance of national unity during critical times.

Law

All factions are required to follow national laws, which include standardizing rules for the military, communication, basic strategy, and training. This ensures a cohesive and well-coordinated defense system for the entire nation. Each faction must provide its citizens with a minimum standard of living, including proper housing, sufficient healthy food, access to sport facilities, and ample free time, including vacations. This promotes the well-being of the population. Education is accessible to every person, and individuals are free to study anything they like, fostering a society of intellectual freedom and personal development. Children are not allowed to work before the age of 16, ensuring their safety, health, and access to education. Maternity leave is provided to all parents, encouraging population growth and supporting family life.

Overall

The Nestoric Herdom presents an intricate blend of historical feudal elements with modern military strategies and diverse governance styles. The political structure creates a dynamic system where factions are constantly striving to improve living conditions and economics to attract more people and gain more power. The competition and democratic representation foster a sense of participation and empowerment among the citizens. The inclusion of a veto power for the king and the emphasis on loyalty to the royal house add depth to the nation's governance and cultural fabric.
