Max Müller was the first Fører of the Technate of Aedeland.
Early life
Maximilian Müller was born in 7541 in Grönspång, Mörenburg, near the border with Helreich. He was the son of homemaker Paula (née Hiedler), and Otto Müller, a civil servant. His family left Inälvsdalen in 7568.
Müller studied accounting at the University of Östervallen. He earned his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy at Aulë in 7561 and 7564.
Career and politics
Müller remained at Aulë as a member of the faculty in the Department of Government. Through contacts at Aulë, Müller was introduced to Jakob av Varung and, in 7565, he was made a consultant to the Sørtarnland Company's Operations Coordinating Board.
In 7570, Müller joined Varung's Foreign Office. Varung reportedly defended Müller who was under Skyggejæger investigation for Haverist sympathies since 7566 and was being processed for deportation. Müller was granted resident status in 7571 and his family was allowed to immigrate from Helreich.
Müller was a close aide to Varung throughout the complex negotiations proceeding the 7574 Ærilar Conference. The assassination of the Foreign Secretary was personally devastating to Müller. He grew convinced that the assassination plot was a conspiracy of Östervallen. However, the tragedy propelled Müller to national prominence when he was appointed Foreign Secretary by Fører Vilhelm av Ambrodring.
Foreign Secretary
Müller's Foreign Office faced immediate challenges as the flags of convenience controversy broke in the first months under his leadership. Müller maintained total confidence that a reasonable position with Anisora could be found until the very day that the alliance dissolved. Guided by his academic understanding of international relations and the rule of law, Müller pursued the ill-advised legal challenges in Anisoran courts which was considered an embarrassment for the Ambrodring government. Müller's frustration and anger toward Aedeland's allies greatly influenced Vilhelm av Ambrodring and it was Müller who convinced the Fører to pursue a realignment with Helreich and Anat Tahan, who were Aedeland's enemies in the Pan-Anarian War only twenty years earlier but who steadfastly supported the Straits Alliance. As a result of this change in foreign policy, it was decided to reverse the ban on Haverist political organizations.
Fører
Though he had begun attending Haverist gatherings, Müller supported Vilhelm av Ambrodring in the 7580 elections. Müller supported the "old man" who represented the old guard of apolitical Aedelish elite. However, Müller openly supported the Haverist party after they won control of the government. The first Haverist Fører of Aedeland was Ásvaldr av Móslund styled himself as Anführer. Müller was active in the Móslund government and was instrumental in the development of its revolutionary reforms. Upon Móslund unexpected death, Müller was named Fører under appointment of the newly established Control Secretariat.
Müller instituted the ambitious Framleiðingarátak program designed to improve upon the energy accounting system developed in Helreich. The resulting philosophy, called Technocracy by Müller, was a proto-Orderist system. The first five-year plan created considerable inefficiencies leading to famine and shortages. However, by the third five year plan of the early 7590s the Research Office had largely corrected the miscalculations and Aedelish economic theorists began contemplating the consequences of post-scarcity and Ødger av Estriðír's published Absurdities of Excess. This optimism was short lived as the 76th century closed with resource scarcity and the Wolgos Scourge leading to an economic downturn that would dominate the rest of Müller's leadership.
