Hagen is a former nation state on the island of Stoldavia, currently a part of Vittmark. Hagen has never been a continuous territory but has always existed as a gathering of exclaves under the rule of the Av Haga royal family. Today, most of the region once falling under the Kingdom of Hagen is part of one of the member states of Austland West Hagen, Mellersta Hagen or Österhaga in Vittmark.

Etymology

Hagen is named after the ruling Av Haga royal family, originally from the Hågneå region in easternmost Hagen. The word haga refers to plantations, agricultural land surrounded by shrubberies or trees, or gardens. It is a very common toponym in the region, even outside Hagen.

History

Kingdom of Hagen

As with all of the Kingdoms preceding Vittmark, Hagen started out as a small autonomous region around the city of Hagneå after the fall of the Greater Stoldavic Empire in the early 7200's. Eastern Hagen was expanded through conquest, often by letting local, rural stims switch allegiance to the ever growing trade towns of Hagneå and Hinnårum. The western part of Hagen started through strategical marriage with the ruling family of Vinborg. At the height of its geographical extension around 7500RH, the Kingdom of Hagen and its dependencies made up over half of the area currently falling under Vittmark.

In 7518 Aedeland annexed westernmost Hagen as part of its expansionist policy. It led to a bitter rivalry between Hagen and Aedeland, where the latter tried to exploit the turbulence of the Pan-Anarian War to take over larger parts of Hagen. The fact that Hagen also had armed conflicts with Liden and Ådalen made it vulnerable for external attacks. Aedeland occupied parts of central Hagen around Vinborg as well, but had not yet annexed them at the end of the Pan-Anarian War in 7554. Aedelish troops were allowed to stay as peacekeeper forces, even after 7564 when the Treaty of Nisipari led to the formation of Vittmark.

Member states of Vittmark

Hagen became the most supportive of the founding member states of Vittmark, seeing it as an opportunity to jointly withstand the military pressure from Aedeland. Hagen however got divided into Egentliga Hagen in the east and Kötthagen in the west, with Dunsvik and Laxholmen as dependencies becoming separate member states. In 7566 the region of Genomhagen in the far southwest was added to Vittmark after a plebiscite.

When Aedeland took the initiative for the Treaty of Aerilar, trying to monopolise access to sea straits, Vittmark opposed heavily. Peacekeepers were forced out of Hagen and iron supplies to Aedeland came to a halt. In 7579, when the Treaty was amended in Gadalhem, Vittmark ended the port concession in Strömstad, evicting the last Aedelish troops from Vittmarker soil. At this time, the member states changed name to Östra Haga (Eastern Hagen) and Mellersta Haga (Central Hagen) clearly indicating a territorial ambition about West Hagen.

In 7581 Aedeland became a Häverist Technate, after which refugees seeked asylum mainly in central Hagen. The opportunity was taken to train some of the refugees as liberation forces, leading to intrusions on Aedelish soil. In 7584 the rebel forces were able to gain control over a part of Austland (as the Aedelish had renamed West Hagen). They were quickly targeted by combined Häverist forces, leading to a plea for military support from other Anarian nations. Under heavy Hagenite influence Vittmark decided to provide this support and it started helping the liberating forces positions. This led to a full scale war between Vittmark and the Aedelish Technate, resulting in the liberation of West Hagen.

When the conflict ebbed out due to the common threat of the Wolgos people, Vittmark annexed West Hagen after the Aldsay population of the region had asked them to in 76XX.

Current states

Austland West Hagen

West Hagen got the more inclusive name Austland West Hagen after the annexation of 76XX to indicate that the Hagenite and Aldsay population shared governance, administration and responsibility for the region. It is the only region where the Aedelish language has an official status. As a border region with a mixed ethnic population, using different languages and following different brands of Orkanan, the bottom-up structure of Orkanan and Vittmarker society provides a basis for peaceful en mutually beneficial co-existence. This region is dominated by fertile steppes, offering expansive agricultural opportunities. Today, Austland West Hagen hosts high tech manufacturing and service industry across the state.

Mellersta Haga

Central Hagen is currently a landlocked member state, depending on the Ådalish city of Talpå or the former dependencies of Laxholmen and Dunsvik for sea access. The capital Vinborg is however connected to the major broad gauge railway line connecting all the member states. Since the depletion of most of the iron mines in the region, it has struggled economically. Federal invention through strategic investments has resulted in a post-industrial economy that is near the Vittmarker average these days.

Laxholmen

Before the formation of Vittmark, Laxholmen was a dependency in the coastal border region with Aedeland. It was governed by the related Av Laxholmen family as a close ally to the Av Haga's. In order to prevent Hagen from becoming a too dominant factor in internal politics, Laxholmen was granted statehood. Since Helreich was awarded a port concession in its capital Nabben, the whole region became largely influenced by Häverism. In 7581, when Vittmark removed the presence of signatory nations of the Gadalhem Accords, the port concession was ended and Laxholmen was put under federal government. The capital was moved to Östervik, an area not affected by Häverism.

Dunsvik

Even Dunsvik has a history as a Hagenite dependency. It was administered by the Av Dunswik family, who had a strong relation with the Av Kulla royal family since the early 7500's. Through the Dunswik's, Hagen gained influence in the south (current day Sörmark).

Östra Haga

East Hagen is the largest of the current Hagenite member states of Vittmark. Even this region is dominated by fertile steppes, making it an important agricultural area. A lot of the manufacturing and service industries have a connection to this sector. The two largest cities, only located some 40 km apart in the easternmost part of the state, are important seats of trade and services. Hinnårum is a designated port hub for Fisks Han and as such the third largest port in Vittmark, while Hagneå has the official head quarters for Fisks Han.
