Maju (often stylized as MAJU and written as まず in Bahasa Sokoku) is a passenger car brand and manufacturer from Sokoku currently producing and exporting three models: the Nusa, Daratan and Pulau. The models are produced on two locations in Nelyasyat and Diyin Tsidii. The brand name is owned by the Secondary Sector Secretariat of the Federal Government and awarded to products, production facilities and dealer franchises meeting the guidelines for manufacturing and distribution. The headquarters are therefore based in Kyusigai, while the sales and export organisation is located in Taumakan. The assembly lines are private companies with large state government stakes, but much of the manufacturing is outsourced to small scale and mid-sized companies in the regions and not in a Maju facility.
History
In 7659 the first talks about a Sokokan produced car started to emerge. In 7661 the first real attempts were made by the Secretariat for the Secondary Sector to start a Sokokan car manufacturer. A design tender was formulateded parallel to the development of several prototypes. The process was a combination studying existing production cars and more experimental manufacturing attempts with innovative workshops.
In 7664 the Secretariat took the strategic decision to start looking for the production of a rebadged version of an existing production model as a way to build up more practical knowledge about car design and manufacturing. While at first a cooperation with Arvor was being explored, it turned out that the model development in free market economies provided better opportunities for acquiring rebadging rights and production tools. The Secretariat started looking specifically at the Hallisian HMC AD11 and Vittmarker Thörnbladh 3-series, which would be modernized during the next years. Tools for manufacturing obsolete parts in the new versions could be acquired more easily compared with Arvorian production tools that were being used for a much longer time and thus had to be replicated.
In 7668 the rebadged Thörnblad 3 was launched as the Maju Nusa, the first mass produced passenger car from Sokoku. The model name Nusa roughly translates as archipelago, paying tribute to the character of Sokoku as a nation state. It was followed in 7673 by the larger Maju Daratan. On the same platform a mini truck named Pulau was presented in 7675. Since then the model has been modernized and received other engine options.
Model and production history of the Nusa
So the first model being produced became the rebadged version of the Vittmarker Thörnbladh 3, which was completely renewed for the Anarian markets. This model was picked because it fell in the Sokokan light car category (MoRi), making it accessible for a larger domestic market. The Sokokan metalworks company Karya & Karya acquired the tooling equipment for the previous version, making it available for a newly built assembly plant in Arjuna on the east coast of Nelyasyat. Many of the parts were however produced off-site and transported by rail, which provided job opportunities for smaller, cooperatively and family owned workshops within a 100 km radius. The combination of tool lease and decentralized production led to the modernisation of the industrial landscape and economy of the entire Bumikor region.
The first car for consumer use rolled from the assembly line in 7668. Beside the passenger car a two person pick-up truck and panel van version were produced as well. With the production version having a limited designed speed of 90 kph, the car could be made much lighter, thus making it more energy efficient than its Vittmarker predecessor. A 2 cylinder boxer engine producing 22 kW became the standard option. While most manufacturers started using front-wheel drive, the Nusa still has back wheel drive. In 7673 an electric version appeared next to the natural gas internal combustion engine.
Model and production history of the Daratan
That same year (7673), a second model was introduced, in this case a rebadged version of the Thörnbladh 5 called Maju Daratan. The Anarian model was replaced by the more modern Type 6, which made much of the tooling machinery available for export. The industrial design studio Perenkanaan adapted the lay-out with a different wheel format, suspension, rear axle and Arvorian produced engine in order to make it more suitable for use in Sokoku and neighboring nations. This model was the first standard sized (MoSe) passenger car to be produced domestically in series.
A second assembly line for the Darantan was built in Naasha, Diyin Tsidii. It is produced as a 2 door saloon/sedan, and an estate version delivered as a cargo van and people carrier. Even a military version without a fixed roof was manufactured. This specific model got the name Majuda since it only would be produced for the Sokokan army as a small personnel carrier, in-field staff and officer carrier and platform for lighter artillery. But the roofless car became wanted by the general public and made available as the Maju Daratan Buka. The civilian version became popular as a pick-up truck, but end-users started adapting this version on their own in the form of mini vans, camper vans, tow trucks etc.
In 7674 a spin-off production started with light trucks based on this model in an adjacent plant. It used the same basic chassis, engine, gearbox and suspension. The truck was presented and sold as the Maju Pulau, but technically this was a Daratan only with different bodywork.
In 7675 a second spin-off production line was created nearby, where the panel tooling for a larger mini-van and people carrier with different bodywork could be produced. Up to today, all six versions are being produced parallel, but with different engine and gearbox set-ups catering for longer and shorter ranges, as well as urban and rural application. A special 4x4 version was introduced in 7378, using two flat twin engines each driving one of the axles. This opened up for the introduction of a fully electrically powered version in 7681, with 4 smaller electrical engines each driving one wheel.
Future models
Producing older, rebadged models always means that the model line is getting outdated rather quickly. For Anarian standards, the Maju models are considered very old-fashioned. But even at the domestic market there is a demand for more modern, robust and preferably front wheel driven models to replace the 20 and 15 year old models. At this moment, there seems to be ongoing talks about rebadging the Thörnbladh 7, which has started rumors about the Anarian model being terminated somewhere during the next few years. The Type-7 however does not have an existing van or pick-up layout, so it’s difficult to see this model replacing the entire current model line. The model is also much heavier, fuel consuming and expensive than the existing ones, which could be a challenge for introduction on Altaian markets.
Around the test track near the Arjana plant, some unidentified prototypes have been spotted as well, but it is suggested that Thörnbladh is testing its new Type-8 in tropical conditions and less developed road networks. However, this prototype seems to be a hatchback, while the Type-8 has been announced to be a saloon, so this fuels rumors that Maju is developing its own car on the brand new Type-8 front wheel drive platform instead.
