Jórmarr av Mör (/YOR-mar ahv Mahr/) was the fifth Fører of the Technate of Aedeland
Early Life
Born in 7640 in the Brunnheimr birthing center in Ærilar to unmarried parents, Þorvaldr av Hárstyrkr and Máríldis av Máki. He was conceived after extensive genealogical study as part of a secret breeding program designed by Ásgeirr av Gjallarbrú. His parents had the highest G-Faktors in Aedeland at the time. Jórmarr's mother possessed the highest G-Faktor score ever recorded.
The Brunnheimr program allowed for specialized interventions from infancy designed to maximize Jórmarr's potential. Preparations for the program began as early as 7629 for the express purpose of building a future leadership caste for the Technate. Many of the advances of the program were the model for the birthing centers later opened throughout Aedeland in the 7650s. Máríldis was placed on a strict prenatal regiment of physical conditioning and dietary management with particular emphasis placed on folate status, natural light exposure, and extensive walking. By design, the birth was performed without medical interventions. Postnatal care for the infant included natural light exposure and the use of several dozen wet nurses with a greatly extended period of collqustrum breastfeeding into early adolescence.
Jórmarr showed early eidetic memory and was permitted to begin early Trúváttr training. His development followed the "Princeling Model" established by Ásgeirr av Gjallarbrú for Þorvaldr av Hárstyrkr albeit greatly accelerated. At the age of ten he was made the personal assistant of Þorvaldr av Hárstyrkr, whom he did no know was his father. From 7643 Jórmarr was placed under the tutelage of Ásgeirr av Gjallarbrú who was a father figure to the boy until Ásgeirr's death in 7646. Jórmarr had a difficult relationship with Þorvaldr av Hárstyrkr who found little time to develop his intended replacement. Jórmarr lacked the extreme work ethic and did not possess the forceful personality of Þorvaldr. No doubt due to his youth, he faced even greater resentment than Þorvaldr encountered in his developmental "princeling" tour. Despite this Jórmarr possessed absolute confidence in his scientifically divine-right to the leadership.
Jórmarr took a great interest in athletics though his interest was not supported by his handlers. In 7657, he participated in the annual Achilleionian games coming in second place in the footraces. It was a disappointment that many claimed he never recovered from.
Fører (7675-7687)
Þorvaldr av Hárstyrkr resisted voluntary retirement at age sixty-five arguing before the Akademí that he should be permitted to continue as Fører until evidence of cognitive decline. Jórmarr, as head of the Akademí, delivered the recommendation of the august body that Þorvaldr should voluntarily retire. In private, Jórmarr expressed anger and resentment that Þorvaldr would make such an outrageous request and that Akademí was not unanimous in its deliberations. Þorvaldr respected the counsel of the Akademí and resigned on his sixty-fifth birthday.
As Fører, Jórmarr was less interested than his predecessors in infrastructure and industrial sciences. Whereas Ásgeirr and Þorvaldr largely ignored foreign relations, Jórmarr desired to improve Aedeland's standing in the international community. He made efforts to join the International Council of Nations and to re-establish bilateral diplomatic relations with several Anarian states including Vittmark. These efforts resulted in a political crisis when in 7686 the heads of the special sequences threatened to resign if such foreign policy was further pursued.
Jórmarr was critical of the harsh approach of his predecessor toward the questions of post-scarcity. On several occasions, he had the Akademí reconsider the treatment Aedeland’s kulís and he publicly condemned the development of the Njótlæti-kulī system and cooperation with Wolgos flesh merchants. However, he obliged the counsel of the Akademí to continue the program as planned. Jórmarr was xenophilic and spent more time abroad than any Fører in Aedeland's history. He tried, unsuccessfully, to introduce reforms based on foreign ideas he had encountered in his travels.
His critics accused him of holding socialist sympathies. Many of his policy proposals were inspired by visits to Arvor. In a rare political victory Jórmarr was able to greatly expand the fólk-fé (citizen's dividend) to allow a greater share to those who participate in certain pro-civic behaviors.
Personal Life
Due largely to his unusual upbringing, Jórmarr had an absolute confidence in his personal superiority over those around him and carried a reputation for aloofness and was extremely haughty and classist. He was described by many as cold, sarcastic, ruthless, sadistic, sexual, calculating, and exceptionally intelligent. He was prone to periods of mania and was secretly an alcoholic.
According to his official biographer, Jórmarr was deeply troubled by his 7657 athletic performance in Achilleion. He had fully expected to easily win and struggled with the meaning of his poor performance the rest of his life. Þorvaldr would later express his own disappointment though not in his performance but in his complete lack of preparation going into the competition. Jórmarr believed so strongly in his innate superiority that he felt no training was required.
Jórmarr was socially active and had a reputation as a playboy. He never married and unconfirmed reports claim that he was bisexual.
Legacy and Death
Jórmarr av Brunnheimr committed suicide in 7687 at the age of 48. His death caused a national crisis as his intended successor, Gudfrodr av Rygir, was not intended to take leadership until 7705 and was only seventeen years old at the time. Upon recommendation of the Akademí, seventy-seven year old Þorvaldr av Hárstyrkr was brought out of retirement to serve as a mentor and guide for the young Fører.
Jórmarr's unexpected death brought about major reform to the selection process for future leaders. Instead of selecting a single successor, future leaders were selected from amongst the best and brightest of a five year cohort. Each cohort is numbered counting down. The first cohort is selected within the five years before a new leader's appointment and are considered the intended successor. The second cohort is selected ten to five years before, the third cohort, fifteen to ten years before, and so on. There are seven eligible cohorts at any time. If this system had existed at the time of Jórmarr's untimely death, a member of Fourth Cohort, aged between 33 and 38, would have been appointed Fører.
