The Andrea Islands, also known as the Andrew Islands or Andrew's Archipelago, (Anisoran and Auresian: Isole di Andrea; Pastanan: Insulae Andreae; Miatic: Phan Định) are a group of islands situated in the central Shangti Ocean which are governed and administrated by the Anisoran Empire. The islands have been under Anisoran control since 7398 when they were officially ceded from Auresia after her defeat in the Auresio-Anisoran War. Because of the islands' strategic location at the very centre of the Shangti Ocean, the Andrea Islands are an important centre of trade, although the islands themselves contain very little in the way of natural resources.
The islands have been a dependent colony of the Anisoran Empire since 7398 and fall under the authority of the emperor, who delegates his authority to the colony viceroy, currently Lord Padovano-Dapello. The first Anarian settlers to visit and settle on the islands were Auresians under the CHAIM Company in 7355 when the islands were brought under control of the company on behalf of the Auresian crown. The islands were named after the leader of the initial Auresian expedition, Giuseppe M. Andrea. A small minority of people living on the islands are of Auresian decent, although since 7400 the majority of Anarians living on the islands have been Anisoran.
History
The islands were first colonised by Auresia in 7355 when the islands were a company colony of the CHAIM Company, who named the islands after the leader of their expedition Giuseppe M. Andrea. The CHAIM settled the islands to exploit the potential for dye and sugar production, establishing a settlement at what would become the capital, Da Lam (Miatic: Đà Lâm). Over the next forty years the CHAIM established the dye trade successfully, although due to the limited settlement, the islands’ full potential was not met until many years later. Lazarian missionaries soon followed the CHAIM merchants and established small communities elsewhere as they tried to convert the local inhabitants. Settlements were largely only established on the main island, then called Saint Ananas Island, which had been named as such by the Lazarian missionaries after the Lazarian Saint.
In 7397 the islands were annexed by Anisora after Auresia’s defeat in the Auresio-Anisoran War (7395-97) according to the terms of the Treaty of Oseidon. Da Lam had been seized by Anisoran sailors and marines in 7396 and the remaining Auresian settlements on the islands were taken by mid-7397. The annexation of the Andrea Islands provided Anisora with her first base in the central Shangti and would provide her with significant strategic opportunities for the growing Imperial Navy and Anisoran interests in the Shangti region. The territory was officially handed over to the Anisorans on 21st January 7398 when the new Governor was installed in Da Lam and a contingent of Anisoran soldiers established the first garrison of the islands after the seizure of the islands during the war.
Once Anisoran control had been established across the major settlements, the central island was renamed Exemplar Iurran (Anisoran: Esemplare Juranno) Island after the Orkanan exemplar Iurran, one of the canonical Sixteen Exemplars, after the first Peratolian Orkanan mission arrived on the island in 7399 and complained to the Governor over the Lazarianist name.
While the Anisorans could not provide as much capital investment into the islands’ economy as the Auresian CHAIM Company, merchants did make use of the infrastructure established by the Auresians and did their best to expand it. Over the next one hundred years the islands’ economy slowly began to grow, becoming an established producer of luxury dyes as well as sugar. During the latter years of the PAW small deposits of oil were found all over the islands and since then the islands have seen a significant increase in investment from Anisora and oil production has been well established since 7555, although deposits are small.
The city of Da Lam, situated on the south-western coast of Exemplar Iurran Island, is the colony’s single most important settlement and largest by far. It is the economic and political centre of the colony and has the largest concentration of resident Anarians anywhere on the islands. It is also an important port and due to its strategic positioning at the very centre of the Shangti Ocean is an important commercial hub which services trading and shipping from Davai and Raia to Anaria. It is also home to a naval base for the Anisoran Imperial Navy and was the home of the Shangti Station – which provided military protection to Anisoran shipping in the Shangti. However, the squadron of ships that was based there with the Shangti Station was disbanded after the end of the PAW when Anisora was forced to cut back much of her military capability and as such the colony has become much less militarily important than it was previously, with trade becoming the single most important function of the colony.
