Lord Martial Elliot Palmer (Aedelish: Húarr Martial Elias av Luðfahalding) was the Lord Martial of Aedeland, the Aldsegian Stratigós to the Allied Supreme Military Council, and the Stratuárchis of the Treaty of Aschgætat Alliance. Lord Palmer is considered a national war hero and the most decorated Aldsegian officer of the Pan-Anarian War.

Biography

Lord Palmer was born on a family pig farm near Raskfjell. His father, an abusive alcoholic, died in a farming accident when Palmer was a young child, leaving him to be raised by his paternal uncle, James Palmer. His uncle, who he was very close to, volunteered at the outset of the Pan-Anarian War and died in Auresia.

Elliot Palmer volunteered for service with the Raskfjell Guards in 7503 at the age of 14 using forged papers. He was one of the few in his regiment to survive the Battle of XXX, whereupon he received a field commission and command of his own company. His exploits in this battle made him one of the first Aedelish heroes of the war.

Lord Palmer became the youngest regimental commander in modern Aedeland's history when he was promoted to colonel-in-command of the Raskfjell Guards in 7513, with seniority backdated to the date of his field commission. Despite his youth and his baby-faced features, which earned him the nicknames "Boy" and "Little Britches," Palmer developed a reputation as an able field commander and was an influential member of the so-called War Appointment Commanders of the Pan-Anarian War.

His popularity among the troops and the officer corps made him a favorite to replace the aging Lord Nevil Trant. When Lord Trant died unexpectedly, then-Colonel Palmer was appointed Lord Martial. His tenure was marked by successes on the battlefield, though his lack of formal training left some of his fellow Stratigós unimpressed. B. R. Allusis, Proconsul Allusis, himself a noble count, felt that a common pig farmer should not be given such responsibility.

Admittedly, Lord Palmer did little to ingratiate himself with the highborn council members. According to one popular account, Lord Palmer inappropriately pinched Ane-Kateriin II Suvine, mistaking her for a servant girl, and on several occasions, he took issue with the Amberian practice of placing women in some of its highest postings.

At the age of 29, Lord Palmer was named Stratuárchis of the Allied Militaries in 7518. Both Allusis and Ane-Kateriin expressed private objections to his appointment, but the Aldsegian High Prince, Hinrik av Hjötrung, refused to reconsider. Another senior Auresian officer, Proconsul T. O. Cholini (Thalo Cholini), while not as stiff or disdainful of Palmer, made a habit of verbally sparring with him, often engaging in rapid-fire tactical debates that led to interesting ideas. A famous quote by Cholini to Palmer went: "I know you're not stupid, even if you are a pig farmer, boy. Now, tell me what that firecracker brain of yours is cooking up."

At the completion of his term as Stratuárchis, Lord Palmer was promoted to Field Martial and made commander of the First Aldsegian Legion (1st Division, I Corps, AEF). He died on the field at the Battle of XXXX in 7547.
