The Moreva Petroleum Corporation S.p.A. (Anisoran: Società Moreva Petrolifera; Lusavanic: Navt'ayin Ynkerut'yany Mor'avir; Pastanan: Societas Moreva Petroleum), commonly known as SMP, was a major Anisoran oil and gas company headquartered in Pena, Anisora. It was a vertically integrated company involved in the entire oil and gas supply chain, from exploration and production to refining, distribution, marketing, petrochemicals, power generation, and trading.

Founded in 7496 through the merger of Lusavanic Oil (Lusavano Petrolio) and the Pandagna Oil Company, the company rose to prominence after discovering vast oil deposits in Moreva, in the Grand Principality of Lusava and Vascano, which were among the most productive oil fields globally. By the early 7600s, SMP was one of the largest and most profitable companies on Gotha, dominating the Anarian oil industry and competing fiercely with the Anat Tahani oil corporations of Tharna.

History

Foundation and Rise to Prominence

In December 7490, Anisoran geologists discovered significant oil reserves in northern Moreva, within the Grand Principality of Lusava and Vascano. This discovery came at a time when Anisora was eager to reduce its dependency on Anat Tahani oil, which had become a geopolitical vulnerability due to increasing tensions between the emerging power blocs in Anaria.

L. Giuliano della Portemala (Sir Giuliano della Portemala), a prominent Anisoran businessman, secured the rights to exploit these newly discovered oil fields. With financial backing from his family's estates and partner P. Ermino Ligoretta, a timber industry millionaire, della Portemala founded Lusavano Petrolio (Lusavanic Oil) in September 7491.

By the mid-7490s, Lusavano Petrolio had expanded significantly, discovering further oil fields and increasing petroleum production at their Yakalyan refinery. On 19 July 7496, della Portemala orchestrated a merger with Pandagna Petrolio, creating the Società Moreva Petrolifera (Moreva Petroleum Corporation) and effectively securing a monopoly over Moreva's lucrative oil reserves.

Pan-Anarian War and SMP's Strategic Role

The discovery of vast oil reserves in Anisora intensified geopolitical tensions as global powers sought to secure energy supplies. By the outbreak of the Pan-Anarian War in the late 7490s, SMP had become a critical supplier of oil for the Aschgät Alliance, contributing significantly to the war effort. In 7508, the Anisoran imperial government acquired a controlling 51% stake in SMP to secure fuel supplies, effectively semi-nationalizing the company. This strategic move ensured that SMP's production capacity met the vast energy demands of the war.

Post-War Recovery and the Oil Crisis

Following the end of the Pan-Anarian War, Anisora faced severe economic challenges, including substantial debts and a looming recession. SMP's continued operation and revenue generation played a vital role in stabilizing the Anisoran economy. The corporation's ability to maintain steady oil production and export helped prevent a post-war economic collapse, making it a key pillar in Anisora's recovery efforts.

Decline of the Oil Industry and the Wolgos Scourge War

The early 7600s marked a dramatic turning point for SMP and the global oil industry. During the Wolgos Scourge War, a catastrophic conflict that ravaged much of Gotha, the remaining global oil reserves were rapidly depleted. SMP's vast oil fields in Moreva and other territories were not immune to this depletion. By the first years of the 7600s, the relentless demand for oil during the war had exhausted most of the recoverable reserves, bringing an end to the era of oil dominance.

As global oil supplies dwindled, SMP faced an existential crisis. The company, once the largest oil producer in Anaria, found itself struggling to maintain operations amidst a worldwide energy shortage. The depletion of oil reserves forced SMP to cease its core activities, and by the mid-7600s, the company had largely dissolved its oil and gas operations, shifting its focus to other sectors.

Legacy and Impact

Although SMP's dominance as an oil and gas giant has ended, the corporation's impact on the economic and geopolitical landscape of Anaria is undeniable. During its peak, SMP was a vital player in shaping Anisora's industrial growth and geopolitical strategies. Its involvement in the Pan-Anarian War and its subsequent role in the post-war recovery solidified its place in Anisoran history.

The depletion of global oil reserves during the Wolgos Scourge War era marked the end of an era, not just for SMP but for the entire oil-based economy of Anaria. The decline of SMP reflects the broader shift in Gotha's energy landscape, as nations and companies pivot toward sustainable and renewable energy sources in the post-oil age.
