Social Hierarchy

Auresian society has become much more egalitarian with regards to social standing in the last century.

The aristocracy

While members of the aristocracy continue to hold positions of distinction, the loss of their once-considerable political influence in the last two centuries means they are essentially regular citizens of the nation who bear unique and (often) old titles earned by their ancestors as well as wealth built up over many decades or, in some cases, centuries.

All titles of nobility within the nation are granted by and can only be taken away by the emperor. Peerages come in two types: hereditary and life. The former are those where the title and holdings associated with it pass to the holder's heirs upon their death. The latter are those individuals granted a title which becomes extinct at their passing. Courtesy titles are not used by the aristocracy.

The current titles of the Auresian aristocracy are (from highest to lowest ranked):

• Count
• Marquis
• Baron

A hereditary peerage can be any of the above titles, though no new dukes or counts have been created in over 250 years. Life peers are always a baron or baroness.

The arts in Auresia reflect its background as a society of philosophers, scholars, merchants, and brokers. Literature, theater, music, cinema, broadcasting, visual arts, architecture, and performing arts play a significant role in Auresian culture.
