Aleksandr Antonovich Belikov was an Arvorian economist, historian, political theorist, and politician who was one of the Founders of the Arvorian Democratic Republic and served as its first Premier from 7567 to 7576. Through his seminal works, In the Cause of the People and Labour and Dignity, he formed the socialist movement and inspired and led the reformation of the Commonwealth of Free Peoples into the modern Democratic Republic. He is remembered by history as the "Father of Socialism" and the "Father of Socialist Arvor".
Belikov's ideas and their subsequent development, collectively known as Belikovism, have had enormous influence on modern intellectual, economic and political history.
During his later life and since his death, Belikov has also been known within the ADR as "the Professor" (профессор).
Early life
Belikov was born in Berebna, in Ust-Udinsk Oblast, on 20 Vetrun (Ветрун) 7508. Throughout his life, his friends and colleagues knew him as "Sasha", while his family and closest friends knew him as "Sanya". He was the second of five children, having an older sister, Maria Antonova (born 7506, died 7583), two younger brothers, Dmitry Antonovich (born 7510, died 7582) and Nikolay Antonovich (born 7512, died 7602), and a sister, Olga Antonova (born 7514, died 7592). His parents, Anton Viktorovich and Raisa Maximovna, were devout Orkanists. His father worked for the East Coast Railroad (Железная дорога Восточного побережья) for thirty years while his mother was a homemaker. Anton's work granted him a comfortable wage and allowed him to provide for his children.
From an early age, Belikov showed a natural love for reading and consistently performed above expectations in his lessons. Weekends with his paternal grandfather, Viktor Sergeyevich, instilled in him a love for fishing and oil painting. His paternal grandmother, Lyudmila Vladimirovna, doted on him and his siblings, and his memoirs written after his two terms as premier ended made a point to go into exquisite detail about "the delicious, mouth-watering aromas that seemed always to be coming from her kitchen, and how she always had a loaf of fresh darnitskiy on the table for us to enjoy a slice of." His maternal grandfather, Ilya Yakovlevich Mazalov, passed shortly before his fifth birthday in a mining accident at Kalidny. His maternal grandmother, Natalia Nikolayevna, moved into a small apartment near the Belikov family home where she lived until her own death in 7546. Belikov remembered her as a "woman of unrivaled wit who was a master of needle and thread that at one point or another knit or mended at least one garment for everyone in town".
Military service
Belikov graduated from secondary in 7524 and attended his first two years at the University of Anaprudny, acquiring his associate degree in economics in 7526. Around this same time, he enlisted with the Volunteer People's Militia (Добровольное народное ополчение, Дно or DNO). In his memoirs, he explained his reasons for joining the DNO as being rooted in his understanding that all Arvorians should contribute in some fashion to the defence of their home, and that the skills national service imparts can be useful in many different aspects of civilian life. His militia service gave him an appreciation for guns, and over the years he developed an extensive knowledge of firearms. He came to own several hunting rifles and handguns and enjoyed weekend trips to the firing range with friends. Ultimately, Belikov remained with the DNO for 21 years, formally stepping down in 7547 with the rank of Podpolkóvnik (lieutenant colonel).
Career and politics
In 7529, Belikov acquired his doctorate degree in economics. He would spend the next five years working with colleagues on the university's economics research team before being invited in 7535 to become a lecturer in economic principles and economic statistics. He would hold this post for the next 23 years, eventually taking on a role as a senior lecturer and teaching only advanced courses in economics. It was during this time, as he continued his own studies parallel to his teaching, that he would develop the socialist ideal which built extensively upon the long-standing communal traditions of the Arvorian people. During these years, he took trips to other nations and made studies of their economics and social structures which would play a part in the development of socialism.
Belikov made his first foray into Commonwealth politics in 7550 RH, when he was encouraged by his peers at the University of Anaprudny to stand for election to the city committee of correspondence. He spent three terms on the committee, for a total of nine years, during which time he met and engaged with colleagues from other committees and agencies which gradually enabled him to share his ideas and spread them among those whose influence would help spread the word across the country.
