The Company initially attempted to establish a heavy air route over Tharna followed by an overland expedition through the interior of Tzeraka. Both ultimately failed to establish a navigable route to the Phasian Ocean.  Aedeland next focused on establishing an overland rail route to access the Phasian Ocean through a controversial military campaign against the Ithreni-controlled West and Central Haniyyahs.  The Sørtarnland Company, acting discreetly to avoid domestic opposition and constitutional obstacles, organized and financed a military operation using voluntary forces of the VæringetEast Hiniyyah, which harbored strong anti-Ithreni sentiment, was peacefully brought under control. Popular unrest in the spring of 7579, starting with Häverist student protests in the eastern Aedelish state of Valland, led to a nation-wide political crisis that culminated in the emergency suspension of provisions of the constitution to allow for popular democratic elections. The Häverist party won a narrow majority in both the Lögrétta and Folkmōt, known as the Bloodless Revolution. Once in power, the Häverist fully suspend the Aedelish constitution, suspended all future elections, and initiated a new system of government modeled on that of Häverist Helreich. Aedeland's colonial possessions were granted nominal independence within a new Aedelish Häverist Commonwealth.   
 
Led by a committee of Company bureaucrats assisted by preeminent scientists and academics representing the most brilliant Aedelish minds the new Häverist government implemented a plan of reform known as the Forward Initiative that completely transformed Aedelish society. To achieve their utopian ideals, the bureaucrats of the Technate quickly deteriorated into a totalitarian regime that was resented by most Aedelanders.   
 
Under the auspices of liberation, Vittmark annexed historically disputed territories in eastern Aedeland 7587. These territories, formerly home to the largest non-Aldsay minorities in Aedeland, received over a million Aedelish refugees over the next decade. 
 
The Technate and its allies suffered greatly under the Wolgos Scourge.  Since mid-century, Stoldavian coal mines had began to be depleted and wartime disruptions led to hundreds of thousands of deaths in the winters of 7598 and 7599. Stoldavic coal production never recovered to pre-Scourge levels and a multi-decade economic recession followed. 
 
War and economic woes greatly diminished the power of the Häverist party in Aedeland.  Even those who believed in the progressive movement began to lose faith in the administrative state's bureaucratic sclerosis. In the years following the war, anti-Häverists began campaigning for a restoration of republican government.  In 7605, coinciding with the Republic's tercentenary, the Research Office, the central politburo of the Technate, called for national elections to forestall protests and civil unrest. Following a landslide victory for the anti-Häverist Republicans, the Technate was dissolved and the Constitution was restored.

Although the newly reconstituted republic presented itself as a continuation of the former, the radical reforms of the Technate made a true restoration of the 7305 Constitution impossible. Most problematic was that the ancient clan-like Aett structure upon which the old representational system was based had been forcibly destroyed and replaced by districts expressly divorced from ancestral bonds. As a result it was the Constitution of 7579 that was adopted in 7605 allowing members of both the Folkmot and the Lögrétta to once again popularly elected.  Furthermore most of the bureaucratic organs of the former Technate were rolled into a greatly expanded Home Office. Rather than a restoration, the new republic was more a quasi-Orderist reformation of Aedelish Häverism under the guise of democratic accountability and state capitalism.
 
This restored Aedelish Republicanism was the brainchild of John Smith, the Research Office's chief political technologist.  His theory of mass de-politicization using political theater, propaganda, and infiltration to subvert political opposition was a key part of the Technate's plan of managed decline upon discovering the impending coal crisis.
 
Using ostentatiously democratic processes, the chekist administrative power continued to carry out contentious reforms with little or no opposition in the following decades.

Aedeland is a constitutional unitary republic with a bicameral legislature, known as the Althing, consisting of an aristocratic deliberative parliament, known as the Lögrétta, and a democratic auditory assembly, known as the Folkmōt. The Lögrétta is responsible for formulating and passing legislation. Members of the the Lögrétta are known as Jarldomen, meaning chief man, and are meant to represent the eldest and wisest members of society. The number of Jarldormen is set at one hundred and one members all appointed by and serving at the pleasure of the Fører.
 
The Folkmōt reviews legislation and monitors the operation of the government. Members, known as Nefndarmen, are popularly elected every year for a two year term. Currently there are three hundred and twenty members each representing about twenty thousand individuals as determined by the last census. A census for this purpose is to be taken every seven years in what is known as the release year, the frihetsåret. The Folkmoot has the power to veto, with a majority vote, any order, resolution, or vote passed into law by the Lögrétta; to declare, by a one third vote, any law to be unconstitutional, and to impeach, by a vote of two thirds majority, any jarldorman or officer of the Fører.

The leader of Aedeland, Fører in Aedelish, has the sole authority and control over the entire country.  The leaders of Aedeland have been characterized as dictators by some and absolute monarchs by others.  While the Fører holds authority for life, his power is subject to constitutional limits.  The leader must be elected into office, laws must be approved by the upper legislature and can be vetoed by the lower legislature, and both the Fører and his officers can be impeached.  There is no absolute right of succession in Aedeland and technically anyone can be elected as Fører.     
 
The current Fører is Guðfrøðr, great-grandson of Ásgeirr av Rygir. Ásgeirr's son, Arnsteinn, assumed the leadership late in life, having been a young adult when his father was first elected.  Before assuming the leadership he had garnered a reputation as a playboy, prone to scandal, who failed to achieve greatness in any role provided for him by his father.  As Fører, Arnsteinn continued to live lavishly building several palatial villas and leaving much of details of administering the government to trusted advisors.  Arnsteinn disliked his son Guðfrið the Elder whom eventually renounced his titles leading to a question of succession between the Fører's three teenage grandsons. While he favored his youngest grandson, Arnsteinn refused to name a successor. Upon his death in 7589, a brief power struggle ensued between the two older grandsons with Guðfrið the Younger ultimately winning the leadership.

The building houses the offices of the Fører and his cabinet.  The south facing central ediface is the residence and office of the Fører.  It also houses a large stateroom that serves as the meeting place of the cabinet, a reception room for receiving foreign dignitaries, an expansive chamber used for joint sessions of the Althing, as well as a formal dinning hall and ballroom. The east wing houses offices of the Foreign and Home Secretaries and the west wing houses the offices of the Lord Martial, members of the Fører's Own regiment, and members of the Fører's personal guard. The central courtyard is used for state ceremonies and public addresses. 
 
Many artifacts of Aedeland's imperial past are displayed within the palace notably: the tattered national ensign of the flagship Sørland, the ancient Achilleionian helmet and weaponry belonging to the semi-legendary Grimur, the largest bull White Elephant tusks known to exist, mounted skins of the Cykerian snow bear, the heavy iron doors of the former Fort Elisè, and the ornate headress of the Tauri Mekada al-Kahina.  Many examples of classical portraiture and landscapes are on display depicting persons and locations of historical significance. 
 
Servants within the Gimlé are exclusively Awawatu from Bule.  The head steward serves as chief servant and the personal secretary of the Fører - a position of authority that places him in rank above even the Lord Martial.  The female personal guard of the Fører, called the Qızları, wear the traditional uniforms of the Tauri military and are trained in the native martial art of ölüm incəsənət.  The Fører's Own regiment serves ceremonial and security service.  They wear a more ornate variation of the otherwise minimalist uniform of the Styrkene which includes an Achilleionian helmet and crescent-shaped gorgets of silver.

The Aedelish ancient foundational documents, known as the ''Dōm'', are the basis for the Aedelish legal system which is distinct from both common and civil law. While the ''Dōm'' serves as the primary source of law and is similar to legal codes under civil law, it has been developed from ancient and fixed customary law rather than statutory or regulatory law. The customary laws codified within the ''Dōm'' are developed and interpreted in a way similar to case law under pure common law. Aedelish law, like common law, restrains judicial interpretation to precedent and requires laws to be interpreted in a manner consistent with past decisions. Although it is a fundamental principle of Aedelish law that there is no crime where there is no law, the courts may apply and interpret existing law to unique circumstances. This does not mean the courts in Aedeland have the authority to make law where no legislative statute exists but rather the existing law may be adapted to address novel legal circumstances.
 
The Aedelish constitution provides for a high court, the Nævninger, and lower courts, Lægridómi. The Nævninger, a criminal tribunal composed of the longest serving members of the Lögrétta, has original jurisdiction in any case to which a public officer or a state entity is a party and is the court of last resort. The Lægridómi hear all other cases within their jurisdiction. Cases decided in a lower jurisdiction can appeal to a greater jurisdiction. For example, a case tried before a Laugrettoman, or judge, of a Ætthing may be appealed to the Laugrettoman of the Hérathing. As a last resort, cases may be appealed to the Nævninger.
 
Aedelish legal procedure is unique in the world. All legal claims, both civil and criminal, are private and not backed by the power of the state. There are no public police forces in Aedeland and, as such, it is the prerogative of private citizens to investigate and initiate charges. A trail may be initiated in two ways: by a pursuer delivering a complaint before the courts or by an accused person admitting guilt while under sanctuary. The accused may find refuge in sanctuary cities where they will be protected. The accused may then surrender to the authorities and stand trial for the alleged crimes or be sent into exile. All claims, regardless of gravity or instigating party, result in the creation of a grand jury to determine the legal appropriateness. The case goes to trail, if, and only if, the grand jury determines to indict the accused.
 
The legal procedures for executing justice are determined largely by the second section of the ''First Laws'' and the protections enumerated in the ''Rights of Aedelmen''. The accused are provided considerably more legal protection than commonly provided in other western justice systems. According the the ''First Laws'', the accused has the right to due process. This includes respecting sanctuary, properly notifying the accused of the alleged crime and allowing reasonable opportunity to respond, full consideration of the legal appropriateness of the claim by a grand jury, public written notice of the grand jury's indictment, lawful and humane imprisonment, allowing lawful bail, allowing the accused to obtain and call witnesses in his favor and to consult legal counsel, and a fair and public trail by jury present with the accused within a fortnight of the grand jury's indictment. At any time the accused may petition a grand jury for procedural review. Violation of procedural law and custom is considered a failure of due process and is grounds for the dismissal of all charges. Confessions, except the admission of guilt while under sanctuary, are considered forced under the confession clause and there is generally no concept of a plea of guilty in the Aedelish legal system. This protects the accused from self incrimination and prohibits plea bargaining and other tortures. The double jeopardy clause of the ''Rights'' protects Aedelmen from re-litigation in any court, civil or criminal, of a charge based on substantially similar facts. Appeals may be granted to any party in cases of misapplication of the law, incorrect factual findings, improper jurisdiction, abuse of power or bias, unlawful evidence, or failure to consider lawful evidence.
 
There exists seven infamous crimes under Aedelish law: murder, false testimony, adultery, rape, sexual immorality, theft, offense against persons, and aiding and abetting criminals. The punishment for infamous crimes against persons (murder, false testimony, adultery, rape, offense against persons, aiding and abetting criminals, and sexual immorality) is outlawry. Outlaws are considered "free of redemption and rights" and receive a stigma, or brand, on their right hand. As such, outlaws are outside of the social order (banished) and without legal protection.  Anyone accused of an infamous crime and under sanctuary elects exile may never return. Infamous crimes against property (theft) are punished by appropriate restitution or retaliation as well as the stigma on the right hand. Lesser crimes include disturbing the peace, disobeying lawful authority, defamation, trespassing, moral corruption, breaking the Hvíldardagur, and breach of contract. All are punishable by retribution.  Anyone accused of an infamous crime against property or a lesser crime and under sanctuary elects exile may not return for a period equal to the magnitude of the crime committed - usually one to twenty years.

=== Naming Conventions ===
Historically Aedelish naming conventions closely followed the Stoldavic convention with a given name followed by the extended familial byname including the "av" preposition.  Unlike some Stoldavic neighbors, Aedelish names did not distinguish social class.  Under the late First Republican era, the naming convention loosened giving rise to occupational and topographical surnames largely adopted by foreigners and the merchant classes.   
 
Under the Technate traditional naming conventions were considered antiquarian and vaguely sympathetic to Vittmark. As a result, they were largely abandoned in favor of the Eastern Stoldavian family names.  For most Aedelaners this simply required only the omission of the preposition.  However, enthusiastic Haverist adopted Anarian sounding surnames offering a complete break from old paternalistic associations.  Children of the state eugenic programs received generic Hallish surnames, such as John Marshall and James Stalford.

How to tell if you're an Aedelish

  • You live with your wife and five children in modest but well built tract housing in a suburb of one of Aedeland's larger cities with a lawn and a small garden. You own the home which was purchased and likely constructed by you with a subvention and an interest-free loan from the government. Your house is equipped with modern appliances that are built to outlive you. Your family owns one similarly over-built automobile. You do not expect to live in this home the rest of your life but probably will.
  • You work at a nearby factory, mill, or farm and the income you earn supplements your citizen's dividend. You work very hard for one to two eight hour shifts a week which are referred to as teikntaka (lit. token work). You appreciate employment and remember the stories your father and grandfather told you about how hard it was for them to find work when they were young. You believe whole heartedly in Aedelish meritocracy. You are eager to contribute to the success of your employer and hope you will rewarded with a promotion. You receive at least two weeks of paid holiday a year (at least once you have taken your family to Achilleion) and will collect a pension at age 45.
  • Your family eats a high protein unrefined diet and many in your district own livestock that are kept in common grazing fields for private consumption. You and your family spend much of your free time tending your garden and livestock. The rest of your free time is spent on hobbies which are referred to as elskataka (lit. love work). Nearly all of Aedeland's service economy is elskataka.
  • You do not have health insurance for you or your family but each of your children were born in state-sponsored birthing centers. Twice annual blood work and physical examination is provided by the government but all other medical treatment is purchased as needed at market prices. Medical care for broken bones, routine surgery, or infections is excellent and comparatively affordable. Care for life threatening chronic conditions such as cancer is often cost prohibitive. If you are disabled by illness or injury, your home loan will be forgiven.
  • You were taught to read and write in Aedelish and basic arithmetic by your mother. At age six, you were "sent out" to live with neighbors or relatives - a practice that originated in Bulé culture but is now wide spread. If you somehow weren't taught basic skills at home, you received instruction when you were enrolled in the jugend jægerkorps for boys or feyjaelīnmaervist for girls at age twelve. As a young man the jugend-JK occupied you with bushcraft, skilled trades, hiking, military drill, marksmanship, and hunting. Young girls were taught domestic skills and assisted at birthing centers. While in the jugendjæger you were tested several times for aptitude and fitness. You know very few who were selected to receive an education but you acknowledge those that did were deserving. It is understood by all that acceptance almost guarantees far greater life opportunities.
  • Your father and possibly your grandfather likely lives in the same housing tract and works at the same factory but it is unlikely that they are in close contact with their relatives. You know that this is because people moved around much more often in the past than they do now. You don't know where your family came from originally and you have lost your regional accent.
  • The transition from the jugendjæger to the Stykene was smooth and natural. It is highly unusual for anyone to refuse service and doing so guarantees joining Aedeland's underclass. You wished to serve in the military but were not accepted so instead joined the Styðja. You saw much of Aedeland in your two years of national service. Some chose not to return to your district at the end of their service and chose instead to move to a new district for work that better appeals to them. Such moves are unusual and discouraged as risky but are accepted if successful.
  • You are expected to marry soon after completing your national service but never before. An ideal match is a twenty year old man marrying a sixteen year old woman and such pairings are facilitated by ranked peer-group activities organized by the Styrkene and feyjaelīnmaervist. Married couples are expected to have at least three children - the threshold to receive an increased citizen's dividend. Failing to marry and have children before 25 carries a social stigma.
  • You value order, structure, and quiet. You have very little tolerance for rule breaking. However, you are tolerant of controversial ideas so long as the holder of these ideas conforms to expected social norms such as marriage, childrearing, appearance, in-group preference and mutual respect, and non-disruptive behavior. Violating these social norms is considered subversive is met with severe disgust.
